Strawberry Hill Gardens Old Driveway and Spa The Old Driveway originates from the Front gate and winds itself through the Spa and up to the Plunge Pool area onto the Great Lawn. Still lined with some of the original Juniper trees and retaining walls, the Old Driveway now contains Anthurium hybrids grown to assist the Hotel's cut flower needs.

Heliconia rostrata The most famous of the Heliconias. Free flowering year round, maximum leaf height only 4ft, these pendent blooms often reach 24" in length and are long lasting in floral arranging.
Bombax elliptica A famous tree that bears 6" "pincushions" from January to May when the leaves drop. A species that requires alot of space as it is a low grower, but with a massive spread and a vigorous root system.
Erythrina poeppigeana, Coral Tree A very fast growing Legume with a short but prolific flowering in March.( At lower altitudes this species flowers after leaf fall). It produce blooms only 18 months after germination, but has a very brittle wood, so do not plant it near your house.
Strelitzia nicolae, Giant Bird of Paradise Unlike it's cousin S. regina, this species has blooms over 12" in length that carry on flowering for several months. It grows into a trunked "tree" over 15' in height and can create a beautiful clumped effect.
Heliconia caribea A very striking Heliconia with scarlet blooms enchanced by a bright silver background of leaves. Like H. lutescens, it is very free flowering and is a great species for hedgerow or rear-border planting.
cognea vitis A little known but irreplaceable species for massive racemes, cut flowers and dried arrangements. It not only grows fast, but it also can stand severe drought and the flowers last for months.
Azalea indica One of the many temperate species that grow at Strawberry Hill, A. indica flowers in March through to May. Used as a hedge in the early landscape, these plants have been propagated from the original parent.
Napoleonica hildebrantii Napoleon's Hat is a rare tree being the only Genus in the Family Napoleoniaceae. The flower resembles the old fashioned army hats of Napoleon's days, hence the name. Though not a showy plant, it is a conversation piece to have in any garden.
Bauhinia galpinii A relative of the tree, Poor Man's Orchid, this spreading shrub is more colorful and free flowering, though not as well known. Named for the leaves that are shaped like a Camel's Foot, it is useful for arbors and drier areas of the garden.
Acalypha punctata A favorite of Jamaica, the Cat's tail is in almost every garden and hotel. Fast growing and tall, the flowers are popular with children and adults for use as hairpieces!
Hedychium alata A beautiful member of the ginger family, this
species produces terminal racemes once a year. Found throughout Jamaica
above 2,000ft, the short flowering time is made up by the vast displays
and heavy scent.
Hedychium spp A "ginger" that produces few 3" blooms, but with an unbelievable scent that is powerful and as subtle as a Jasmine.
