ReggaeXplosion is an evolving exhibit that celebrates Jamaican Music by using images, videos and soundtracks (both music and interviews) from the 1950's to the present day. It houses soundbooths for each genre and DVD monitors that are genre specific; in addition there is a giant screen that shows compilation DVDs and provides the ambient music. Phase 1 is an explosion of sight and sound that introduces the public to the complex evolution of Jamaican music. Contained within the Introduction and 8 genres listed below are photographs that include not only artists, but the country at that time, labels, record covers, producers and more.
The Bar Introduction The Introduction shows the cultural influence from religion to R&B, in a graphic timeline, that set the foundation for the artist's expansion into different rhythms and instruments.It is our varied culture and ancestry that ensured the Reggae beat evolved to what it is today. The "Bar" is the pickup point for your headphones and guide.
2.Mento to Ska (click) Jamaican folk music, afro-Cuban, R&B, and big band fusions, Calypso and Ska. Images of 50's dance halls, clubs, fashions, and jukeboxes. Coxone Dodd and Duke Reid, rude boys and birth of sound systems. From here emerged the birth of Reggae with hits such as"My Boy Lollipop", "The Harder They Come", Prince Buster, Heptones, Early Wailers, Laural Aiken, Windrush and the seeds of UK reggae.
3. Roots Rock Reggae (click) Rastafari and celebration, reggae with a message. From Burning Spear, to Luciano the flame burns as brightly today as it did in the early 70's. One of the largest genres as the explosion of Reggae in it's varied forms was most prominent at this time.
4. Dubmasters (click) Lee 'Scratch" Perry introduces DUB to the world.Fusing
first world technology with third world innovation. A detailed reproduction
of his studio and famous artwork houses the varied images.
5 Bob Marley (click) The Legend lives on. A section has been devoted to Bob Marley which includes Peter Tosh.
6. Dancehall (click) DJ's and dancehall queens, high tech hardcore, psychedelic video age reggae. Slackness, fashions and style. The images and videos around portray the sexiness associated with the Dancehall cult.
7.Outernational (Click) Reggae redefines global pop music. Nigeria, Alpha Blondie, Aboriginal empathy, Senegal, New York, Hip Hop, Rap, World Cup, Japan.
